Designated as a Traditional Craft of Hyogo Prefecture and an Intangible Cultural Property of Toyooka City, this is a traditional craft of Kinosaki Onsen with a history of approximately 300 years.
The history of straw craft dates back a long time. In the mid-Edo period, a man named “Hanchiku,” a resident of Inshu (present-day Tottori Prefecture), visited Kinosaki Onsen for hot spring therapy. It is said that this marked the beginning of the craft: to help cover his lodging expenses, Hanchichi attached straw dyed in various colors to bamboo flutes and spinning tops, which he then sold at the entrance of his inn.
Made from barley straw, this craft is characterized by a silky-smooth texture, an elegant luster, and a timeless charm.
Reportedly, there are only two shops in all of Japan—both located in Kinosaki Town—that produce and sell this craft, making it a cultural tradition we hope will continue for generations to come.
