Traditional toys and crafts from Yamanashi Prefecture.
Made since the Edo period, these daruma are unique in Japan, featuring a charming design with a child cradled in their arms.
The parent Daruma’s gaze is directed downward to watch over the child and to meet the eyes of worshippers when displayed on a household shrine; the child Daruma, meanwhile, stares straight ahead, embodying the wish that the child “move forward steadily toward their goals.”
Out of a parent’s hope that their child will “surpass them,” the child Daruma also sports a stately beard.

Daruma dolls are found throughout Japan and continue to be cherished.
They are modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen school of Buddhism. According to a widely accepted theory, the dolls’ limbless design is based on a legend in which Bodhidharma’s hands and feet rotted away after he practiced zazen facing a wall for nine years.Since the Edo period, Daruma have been considered a symbol of good luck, inspired by the legend that he would get back up no matter how many times he fell during his rigorous ascetic training, as well as the legend that he lived to be 150 years old.

The tradition of painting in the eyes once a wish is granted is believed to breathe life into the figure. The reason for the red color is that, since ancient times in Japan, red—the color of “fire” and “blood”—has been believed to ward off evil spirits. Daruma figures of various shapes, colors, and patterns can be found throughout Japan.
