Ryukyu papier-mâché—a traditional toy that has long been cherished in Okinawa. Papier-mâché is said to have originated in China and later spread to Japan.
In the past, the Ryukyu Islands apparently held an annual toy fair called “Yukkanu-hee,” but the fair came to an end with the outbreak of World War II.After the war, the toy fair was never revived, and Ryukyu Hariko became a prized item among collectors. Yasufumi Furukura, the late pioneer who dedicated himself to the restoration of Ryukyu toys, revived this tradition, and today it continues to be passed down and cherished as a traditional folk toy.
