The artist, Renpei Kato, was born in Taisho 4.He experienced the end of the war in Manchuria, and after returning to Japan, he began making dolls in his hometown of Hojo Town (now Hokuei Town). At first, he apparently used scrap camphor wood and washi paper as materials, but during the postwar period of scarcity, he took notice of the soil on the banks of the Tenjin River and began making clay dolls.
Mr. Kato created a variety of works based on myths and folktales from the Izumo region. Although his dolls were affectionately known as “Renbei Dolls,” the craft unfortunately came to an end with his passing in 2012.
