The Yatsuka Odori is said to have been brought from Sendai by Lord Date Hidemune, the first feudal lord of the domain, during the Genna era (1615–1624). It is believed to have originated as a ritual dance performed in honor of the portable shrine during the festival of Uwatsuhiko Shrine, which serves as the domain’s guardian deity.
It is a dance featuring seven male deer frolicking around a single central male deer. The melancholic singing accompanied by the beating of small drums is said to embody the longing for their homeland felt by the people who were enfeoffed in this region as they reminisced about distant Sendai.
