About 350 years ago, when Tochigi Prefecture was struck by a drought, villagers rescued a catfish that was struggling in a dried-up area and released it into the Uzuma River.
Shortly thereafter, it began to rain, the fields were replenished, and the damage caused by the drought reportedly disappeared.Later, when the child of the villager who had saved the catfish nearly drowned in the Uzuma River, many catfish are said to have appeared and rescued the child.
Based on this story, it has become a beloved charm for wishing for children’s good health and safety, as well as a charm to ward off earthquakes—a belief stemming from the word “namazu” (catfish).
