The origin of the traditional folk toy known as the “Kobuna” dates back to a time long ago when smallpox was rampant. It is said that a sick person who ate a yellow crucian carp caught in the Tagawa River was cured of the disease. Since then, people have been making papier-mâché versions of the Kobuna and offering them at their household shrines to pray for good health and freedom from illness.
