There are many theories as to how it began, but it is a famous doll of Hinaku Onsen. A long time ago, a young man with strong filial piety prayed at Itsukushima Shrine for his father’s recovery from illness, and on the night of the full prayer, he received an oracle and discovered a hot spring by digging at the site.
He immediately carried his father on his back and within seven days he was cured of his illness, but it was Okin-san, a fisherman’s daughter who lived nearby, who helped the young man during this time. A crafty person who heard the story made a doll modeled after the young man’s childhood and sold it as a souvenir to visitors to the spa. The area is also famous for producing paulownia wood and geta (wooden clogs), which were made from the scraps of paulownia wood.
