Doshin-men: August “Yaburu”… It’s even better to be mindful that you might also be “yaburu” (broken).
Doshin-men are folk toys created so that people can bring the “Dosojin”—deities enshrined along roadsides at mountain passes, crossroads, and village boundaries to ward off evil spirits and epidemics—into their homes.
They are crafted in the style of the “Twelve Directs” (Jūni-choku)—one of the almanac notes that indicate auspicious or inauspicious dates, times, and directions—and each mask features a distinct expression inspired by the meaning of its corresponding entry.
Reflecting various wishes—such as protection during travel and matchmaking—these masks express a rich range of emotions through primitive, eccentric, wild, and free-spirited designs that capture a sense of mystery and simplicity. As such, they are valuable wooden crafts that also serve as important folk artifacts.

These are the works of Ranson Miyata.

A Doshin mask passed down in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture.
It is said that Ranson Miyata, who had spent many years researching Dosojin, began crafting these masks in 1954 (Showa 31) as folk toys that could be brought home.
In addition to wood carvings, there are also versions made of washi paper.
