It is thought to be a tray with a beautiful carved wooden pattern made as a souvenir of Hokkaido.
Ainu patterns are said to vary by region, and there are subtle differences in characteristics between the Hokkaido Ainu and Sakhalin Ainu, as well as between the various regions within Hokkaido. The patterns are not merely aesthetic, but also contain meanings of faith and protection against evil.
