The famous story goes that Kenshin Uesugi of Echigo helped the people of Shinano and Kai by sending his long-time nemesis, Shingen Takeda of Kai, a horse filled with salt in a Shingen bag. Even after Kenshin’s death, the people of Shinano did not forget this favor and made horses and Shingenbukuro out of rice straw. On February 8, during the Dosojin Festival, they would fill the Shingenbukuro with Botamochi and have children pull the horse on its back, make an offering before the gods, exchange rice cakes, eat them, pray for a good harvest and good health, and pull the straw horse home and throw it onto the roof. The horse would then be pulled by a straw horse and thrown on the roof. The horse was then pulled and thrown on the roof. It is said that the horse was called “Kenshinma” (horse of the god of fortune).
