These clay dolls are still being made in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture.
The history of this pottery dates back to the latter half of the Edo period, when Kinzo Takaya I, who had learned pottery making in Chikuzen, Kyushu, was taken in by the Tsugaru Clan and built a kiln in Shitakawara, where it continues to be made today.
Clay mixed with red clay and sand is formed into plaster molds, and the pieces are fired in a kiln at a high temperature of approximately 800 degrees Celsius for several hours before being painted and finished. In addition to the famous dove whistles, there are hundreds of other types of molds that have been handed down since the Edo period (1603-1868).
