A local toy made in Kochi City. Tosa is the center of whaling and is said to be the origin of Japanese whaling.
In Tosa, which has long been known as a whaling base, the toys began when fishermen in Tsuro-ura, Muroto City, made handmade whaleboats and whaling wheels out of wood as souvenirs for their wives and children whom they had not seen for a long time on their way home from the fishing grounds.
The whale boat is a replica of a fishing boat used for big catch celebrations, with four wheels, painted in red, yellow, green, and black, and with wave and flower patterns painted on the belly to represent the different grades of whaling duty.
