This is a local toy from Kusu-cho, Oita Prefecture.
Kiji-guruma is a toy that exists in various parts of Kyushu. The Kijiwaguruma of Kitayamada is a simple and rustic creation, which is said to have been praised by Bernard Leach, who also wrote a poem about it in Kitahara Hakushu. The stately appearance and the expression of the wood surface are unique.

There are many different types of kiji-guruma in the Kyushu region, ranging from brightly colored ones to ones made of wood, all of which are very unique. Each has its own origin and is still a popular local toy.
It might be a good idea to collect a Kiji-guruma from each of Fukuoka, Oita, and Kumamoto prefectures and enjoy the differences.
Miyazaki Prefecture’s UZURA-GURUMA. In Kagoshima Prefecture, it’s not a “bird” but a “sea bream,” yet it’s another recommended local toy featuring the same cart design.
