In Nagasaki Prefecture, kites are called “hata,” and the Nagasaki Hata-flying Festival is one of the three major events in Nagasaki, along with Nagasaki Kunchi and Seirei Nagashi.
Kite flying in Nagasaki was introduced by the Dutch around the end of the 18th century. There are various theories, but it is said that the name “hata” came from the Indian kite “pattan”. The designs were made using red, blue, and white colors, inspired by the Dutch flag, and there were 200 to 300 different designs. The designs have meanings, and are good luck charms that contain the wishes and thoughts of the people. Currently, about 50 types of traditional designs are being made.
