It is believed to have been made since the Edo period, and the making of the bamboo spring that serves as the mechanism determines the finished product.
The story is told around the time Kiyomasa Kato built Kumamoto Castle. It is said that the original dolls were created by Nishijinya Hikohichi, a doll maker, during the Kaei era (1848-1853) based on the legend of a popular foot soldier named “Odoke no Kinta,” and later came to be called “Obake no Kinta” or “Meokuridashi Ningyo” (doll with a protruding eye).
