Otsu-e, folk paintings, have been a specialty of Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, since the early Edo period (1603-1868).
At that time, they were known as souvenirs and talismans for people traveling along the Tokaido Highway, and there were ten representative subjects called “Otsu-e ten kinds”, each of which was also advocated for its efficacy as a talisman, the most representative of which was a humorous representation of a demon’s cold prayer (a spell to exorcise demons and stop children’s crying at night).
