The Japanese religious ceremony of Ezuma-no-kae exists at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and other Tenmangu shrines throughout the country. At Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, the event is held mainly on the night of January 7 each year, and the wooden bullfinch is exchanged while saying, “Let’s exchange, let’s exchange,” and whoever gets the golden bullfinch that the shrine has mixed in is promised good luck that year. The wooden Japanese bullfinch is not made of wood, but of clay. Wooden Japanese bullfinch has a long history of about 400 years and is said to be a guardian deity of good luck.
