About 660 years ago in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture, Kuya Shonin built a hermitage in this area during his travels around the country. The shonin was so pitied that he gathered the villagers together and had them dance the deer’s playful behavior to pray for the repose of its soul.
The dance is characterized only in Iwate Prefecture by eight dancers singing and dancing in groups while beating drums. The dance is filled with a melancholy tone that is typical of northern Japan. Shika Odori is a local performing art that is still passed down from region to region throughout Iwate Prefecture.
