A typical local toy from the Kagoshima Jingu Shrine in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is commonly called an incense box.
It is a toy modeled on the ceremonial box used by Queen Toyotama Hime-no-Mikoto when she was married to Hikohohojimisama. The box is made of split wood and has a boldly painted flower pattern that expresses simple elegance.
It is a historic toy that is displayed at the shrine on March 10, the day of the Wisteria Festival to commemorate the joyous occasion of His Eminence’s return from the Land of Watatsumi-no-kuni.
