There are many different types of koma in Kumamoto Prefecture, but the Hiko-ichi koma was born after World War II based on a tale from the Yatsushiro region, in which Hiko-ichi beat a mischievous raccoon dog with a ponchi.
The Hiko-ichi Koma is made of dried cherry wood, shaved on a wheel, and painted, which is the same technique used to make other koma.
In 1952, Hikoichi Koma won the Governor’s Prize at the Kumamoto Prefecture’s local toy exhibition.
