Two years after Francis Xavier came to Japan in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1549, he went to Oita City and proposed Christian missionary work to Otomo Sorin, lord of Bungo, who readily agreed. Since then, many missionaries have come to live in the city, and under Sorin, Christianity has spread to various parts of Japan.
In memory of the sound of the Angelus Bell (the bell of the omen or prayer of the omen), the Namban Bell was made to represent the figure of the great pioneer Christian daimyo Sorin Francis and other Namban people with clay bells. There is a bronze statue of Otomo Sorin in Kasugaura, Oita City, Oita Prefecture, along with a monument to the remains of the Nanban trade.
