The Otomo clan (a family based in Bungo Province, Kyushu (present-day Oita Prefecture) from the Kamakura period to the Warring States period) had these dolls made as a good luck charm during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasion of Korea in the Warring States period, and they are also called “Otomo dolls. In Japan, the most famous Tenka Taishogun dolls are those made at Kora Shrine in Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture, and existed as local toys, although they are now defunct.
It is interesting to note that in the Iizaka region of Fukushima Prefecture, kokeshi dolls are called “kideko,” or “wooden dolls,” and that there are dialects in Japan that are the same or similar, even though they are far apart.
