The figure is a simple expression of rain gear unique to snow country, with a goza hat made of rush and boots made of straw, created by the Buddhist sculptor Ho’un Maeda in 1950. The design is high, and the rounded face is a wonderful example of the high level of skill involved in this work.
In addition to Houn, his cousin Yoshiaki Kaneko, who was a carpenter, also produced yuki-ningyo’s, and those produced by Yoshiaki became popular around 1957.
