These folk toys are inspired by the deities enshrined at Kagoshima Jingu, a shrine steeped in myth and history. Their rustic charm and vibrant colors, rich with the atmosphere of the southern islands, continue to be widely cherished among folk toys from across the nation.
Modelled after a red female fish that has swallowed a fishing hook, this toy has a long history: it is traditionally displayed at the shrine on the day of the Wisteria Festival, commemorating the auspicious day—the 10th day of the third month of the old calendar—when the deity returned from the Land of Watatsumi.
