There are various theories that the name “Dondoro” means a person’s life, combining “Doro” (mud) and “Don” (don) in “Yo‾idon (Ready, set, go!/A cheer before starting a race)”, or that it is derived from a god enshrined by William Adams, who served Ieyasu Tokugawa as a diplomatic advisor and interpreter in the early Edo period to protect people from illness. The shrine will temporarily cease to exist in the Heisei period.
Although the dolls ceased to exist in the Heisei period, a reprint of the original version was produced in 2018, and doll exhibitions and workshops are being held.
