Ryukyu papier-mâché is a traditional toy that has been loved in Okinawa since ancient times.
This is a work by the late Yasufumi Furukura, a leading figure in the restoration of Ryukyuan toys.
Hariko is said to have originated in China and spread to Japan. In ancient Ryukyu, a toy market called Yukkanuhi was held once a year, but the market disappeared with the outbreak of World War II. After the war, the toy market was not revived, and Ryukyuan papier-mâché became precious to collectors, but Mr. Furukura revived it, and now it is passed down and loved as a traditional local toy.
