The history of the hagoita dates back to the Muromachi period, when it appeared in historical texts under the names “hagoita” and “kogita,” and it has been a beloved tradition for centuries.
This particular hagoita tells the story of a group of Taira clan members who, after their defeat at the Battle of Dan-no-ura, sought refuge with the Yase clan—the feudal lords of Kuma—and traveled to Hitoyoshi. However,However, when the Yase clan—which had ties to the Taira—was overthrown and the Sagara clan, the Genji-affiliated local magistrates, came to power, these fugitives, having lost their support, began crafting this traditional toy of the Hitoyoshi and Kuma regions—such as “Kiji-uma,” “Hanatebako,” and “Hagoita”—which are characteristic for their yellow, red, white, and green colors.
