This is a typical example of “Kishimayama Itto-bori” carving, a kachikachi-gurtuma with a magpie motif.
Ittobori carving, which was popular at the time for its motifs of wild birds living in the Kishima-Yama region, is unfortunately now discontinued.

It is a proud local toy of Japan that has been recognized overseas as well, having won the World Craft Good Design Award in Switzerland. Unfortunately, it is no longer produced.
