This is a traditional wooden toy from the Hida region. It is said that the tool used to cook rice gruel in the event to ward off bad luck, called “okayu-bo/porridge-stick” in the koshogatsu season, gradually changed into a wedding celebration and a toy for inviting good luck.

Iiwaibo, a local toy from Takayama (Hida region), is a lucky charm derived from the koshogatsu (rice gruel scraping stick), and is used in the custom of beating a bride’s bottom to wish for a child, safe delivery, and marital bliss. It is decorated with shaved ornaments and a treasure ship, and is mainly popular as a traditional folk art of Hida to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck, along with sarubobo.
